Achieve: Achieve Success: Are Your Ideas Half Baked or Ready to Serve?

“Some have half-baked ideas because their ideals are not heated up enough.”

As a Project Manager I have and field an endless supply of half-baked ideas.  There are more ideas than I can bake each week, so I have set a goal to break the ideas down into two ready to serve deliverables each week.  My process to do this is as follows:

Get clear on the expectations.

  • Is this idea going to lead to real beneficial change?  Is this idea self-contained or will it be one in a process of ideas that move us towards our goals?  Or is this just another random shiny object distracting us from making any real progress?
  • Who is asking and why are they asking for the materialization of this idea?
  • How will the implementation of this idea benefit others?
  • Identify all need dates, milestones, communication plans, and end objectives.

Plan.

  • Break the final objective down into specific deliverables.
  • List and sequence the individual tasks necessary to meet each deliverable.
  • Recruit help as necessary.
  • Create a calendared plan of action.

Execute.

  • Work your plan.
  • Delegate where appropriate and necessary.
  • At the end of each day note what has been accomplished, identify the next steps, confirm you are tracking on the milestones, deliverable, and objective.

Proof.

  • Gather feedback on the work you have accomplished from key stakeholders.
  • Make any adjustments necessary.
  • Move back to additional execution or forward to plan your delivery method.

Deliver.

  • Create a well thought out delivery plan appropriate for your ready to serve idea.
  • Practice your delivery.
  • Deliver fully.

Evaluate.

  • Gather feedback
  • Did your ready to serve idea meet the initial intentions?
  • Is your idea being used by the intended end users?
  • Who is using this idea who was not on your original list of end users?

Follow Up.

  • Implement and follow-up on any relevent feedback.
  • Tailor the idea for the additional end users.
  • Come to agreement on any next deliverable, the completion of the objective, or the next half-baked idea to complete.
